Internet – 40 years old

November 1, 2009

ARTICLE – Happy 40th Birthday, Internet! – By Jared Newman

On October 29, 1969, the Internet came in not with a bang, but with a “lo.”

The Internet was born with the first data message sent between two networked computers.

RE – DISCOVERED: (URL; pcworld.com) – AND; Found a recent update to a favourite topic of mine (One that spells it out in simple terms for the average user) The article – the ongoing  debate on, .. >>>  ‘Net Neutrality FAQ: What’s in it for You’ <<<

This topic/debate is VERY-linked into the Mis-Guided filter systems, that various governments continue to impose on Interlinked-Networks

http://www.xtreefanpage.org/lowres/x60softw.htm – This explains (a lot of History) about older filemanagers, and is a great resource.

Something that might be useful – > http://www.ztree.com/html/ztreewin.htm

Something Else; Reviving Windows File Manager
Installation kit for WinFile for the Windows Vista Operating System

AND; While I am at this, .. ‘xtree’ file management stuff – here is a nice list on the wikipedia of OTHER file managers that might be of interest, .. (at the bottom of this page) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOS_Shell

There is something ‘screwy’ going on with how M$-Internet-Explorer renders this blog, (OR something wrong with HOW I have setup this blog) – SO – Use the browser firefox Ver 3.5.4 , .. as the Right-Hand mini-blog is pushed to the bottom of the page if you use IE (sometimes, .. depending upon what version is used)

OBSERVATION: This post was published TODAY – Friday 30 October 2009 – ( _wp decided to place 29 Oct) – DST – is causing endless problems as IDIOTs in government continually change to day that day light saving is implemented.

rfc1925 -  The Twelve Networking Truths (Most of it is pasted below)

1. Introduction

This Request for Comments (RFC) provides information about the
fundamental truths underlying all networking. These truths apply to
networking in general, and are not limited to TCP/IP, the Internet,
or any other subset of the networking community.

2. The Fundamental Truths

(1) It Has To Work.

(2) No matter how hard you push and no matter what the priority,
you can’t increase the speed of light.

(2a) (corollary). No matter how hard you try, you can’t make a
baby in much less than 9 months. Trying to speed this up
*might* make it slower, but it won’t make it happen any
quicker.

(3) With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is
not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they
are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them
        as they fly overhead.
(7) It is always something

(7a) (corollary). Good, Fast, Cheap: Pick any two (you can't
            have all three).

(8) It is more complicated than you think.

(9) For all resources, whatever it is, you need more.

(9a) (corollary) Every networking problem always takes longer to
solve than it seems like it should.

(10) One size never fits all.

(11) Every old idea will be proposed again with a different name and
a different presentation, regardless of whether it works.
(12) In protocol design, perfection has been reached not when there
is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take
        away.

Press 'Ctrl + Scroll' - Resize's the text-SIZE in the browser. I MUST learn more about _wp-formatting, and design, .. I have no idea as to WHY this post is different to any  other post - other than, ..

(1) I have NOT filtered the webbased text via notepad (Maybe I should perform a number of little TESTs, - on/off etc)

(2) The 'Drop-Menu' - Paragraph Vs Preformatted (Now what is that font? or is it a 'style'?)

GOOGLED Preformatted text

The preformat tag instructs your web browser to display the text exactly as typed in the HTML document, including spaces, tabs, and carriage returns. ... *+*+* ok

DVD decoder (mpeg-2)

October 25, 2009

Define  ‘dvd decoder’ ?

GOOGLED: Wiki DVD decoder

#1: Starting with what DVD is, .. >>> DVD, also known as Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc, is an optical disc storage media format, and was founded in 1995. Its main uses are video and data storage. DVDs are of the same dimensions as compact discs (CDs), but store more than six times as much data.

#2: DVD-Video is a consumer video format used to store digital video on DVD discs, and is currently the dominant consumer video format in Canada, Europe and Australia.[4] Discs using the DVD-Video specification require a DVD drive and a MPEG-2 decoder (e.g., a DVD player, or a DVD computer drive with a software DVD player). Commercial DVD movies are encoded using a combination of MPEG-2 compressed video and audio of varying formats (often multi-channel formats as described below). Typically, data rate for DVD movies range from 3 Mbit/s to 9.5 Mbit/s, and the bit rate is usually adaptive.

#3: How it might fit into the Micro$oft perspective – Plug-ins for Windows Media Player
Plug-ins are optional components that you can add to Windows Media Player to extend its functionality. For example, you can add audio, video, or rendering effects as well as DVD playback capabilities. To learn how to create plug-ins for Windows Media Player, see the Windows Media Player SDK.

AND FINALLY THIS; (Making your Micro$oft media player complete)

DVD Decoder (MPEG-2 Decoder) Plug-ins
Windows Media Player becomes a full-featured DVD player when combined with a DVD decoder (MPEG-2 decoder) with features such as full-screen video playback controls, DVD chapter listings, and integrated cover art.

#4: Video codec? -A video codec is a device or software that enables video compression and/or decompression for digital video.

GOOGLED – DarkFibre

Multi-state ISP peering
Ultra Serve operate networks in multiple states and locations in Australia. These networks are interconnected by dark fibre connectivity allowing data centres to load share traffic and utilise the best possible path to deliver content to users. Ultra Serve also utilise local peering in multiple states with Pipe Networks, which directly connects us to 150+ local ISP networks.

INSIGHT from ZDNET- (Into this topic) A dark fibre network is a private network closed to the general Internet community.

Join Domain (Cont'd) access denied

Join Domain ERROR  *access denied*

As written in the previous post – joining a domain is not complicated – UNTIL you find that you are getting some sort of error message.

SENARIO: Joining XP-Professional System (SP2) to 2003 SBS R2

ERROR MESSAGE: Access Denied when changing client computer from Workgroup to a Domain computer.

SOLUTION: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908372

CAUSE: It would seem this senario is true – I have had 2003 SBS R2 installed as a virtual machine, and ‘connected-system-X’ to the domain, BUT – only via Terminal-Services, and the IIS-Default – website.  System-X, was NEVER joined to the Virtual-Machine DOMAIN, ..  >>> (NOT in the sense described in these posts)<<<  . And system-X, was still setup / configured as part of a Workgroup.   – So THAT is part of the ‘senario’.

M$ – QUOTE; ‘This problem occurs if the client computer was previously joined to a domain that had policies that disabled SMB signing.’

REGISTRY EDITs – Once completed,  system-X connected to the grd domain just like it should – in theory, all good, this post is about listing “Gotcha #1″ (That I have encountered, while setting up Client / Server / Domain environment – ready for further studies in this area of systems administration.

PASTED BELOW – The actual registry edits / checks performed. (Pasted directly from M$ site here)

To resolve this problem, follow these steps on the client computer:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

Make sure that the Restrictanonymoussam registry entry is set to a value of 0×1.

  3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

Make sure that the Enablesecuritysignature registry entry is set to a value of 1. Make sure that the Requiresecuritysignature registry entry is set to a value of 0.

  4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\parameters

Make sure that the Enablesecuritysignature registry entry is set to a value of 1. Make sure that the Requiresecuritysignature registry entry is set to a value of 0.

  5. Restart the client computer.

Join Domain

October 18, 2009

GOOGLE SEARCH – * Join Domain * -

SIMPLE VERSION: Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK (And click on the ‘Computer Name’TABBED page, NOTE Administrator privileges are requried)

Once in here – Perform the following – (Pasted from M$ ARTICLE ID: 295017)

1. Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.

2. Type the new computer name in the Computer name dialog box.

3. Type the new domain or workgroup in either the Domain dialog box or the Workgroup dialog box.

4. Click More to change the primary Domain Name System (DNS) suffix.

Note Windows XP Home Edition is not designed to join domains. Windows XP Home Edition is only designed to join workgroups. Therefore, use Windows XP Professional to join domains.

5. Click OK three times, and then restart the computer.
