NEVER USE WESTERN UNION
If you need to send money to someone out of the country, think long and hard before you use Western Union. Especially if the person wants the money quickly, says he can’t accept PayPal or other online payment methods, and especially if it’s for a big ticket item. It’s not such a great deal if the laptop never turns up and your money is gone!

Logical Fallacies

Logical Fallacies – (Defined well at atheism.about.com)

Fallacies are defects in an argument that cause it to be invalid, unsound, or weak. In a deductive argument, the existence of a fallacy means that the argument is not valid – even if the premises are true, the conclusion might still be false.

dead peasants insurance

THIS; is quite a popular google search; -  dead peasants insurance

WHAT DOES IT MEAN? – (benefits payable to the corporation)

Corporate-owned life insurance
Corporate-owned life insurance (COLI) is life insurance on employees’ lives that is owned by the employer corporation, with benefits payable to the corporation. COLI was originally purchased on the lives of key employees and executives by a company to hedge against the financial cost of losing key employees to unexpected death, the risk of recruiting and training replacements of necessary or highly-trained personnel, or to fund corporate obligations to redeem stock upon the death of an owner. This use is commonly known as “key man” or “key person” insurance. Once, COLI was used for masses of non-key employees in order to get tax benefits, a practice known as “janitor insurance” or “dead peasant insurance”. Congress set limits on the practice in 2004, and today COLI is limited to the more senior executives of a firm.

The truth is out there

Access Denied

August 26, 2009

The practice and policy of global Internet filtering;

Access Denied tells us unmistakably that the Internet is one of the most important – and most contested – terrains of global politics.

It is being fought over by states, civil society organisations, and corporations. The essays in this volume do a superb job of educating us about the new battlefield of global politics.

The Security 'angle'

August 9, 2009

FROM A USERS PERSPECTIVE:

#1: Basic Computer Security – (Minimum of THREE layers – Meaning:- Using a ‘Limited User Account’, Using, Anitivirus and having it updated regularly, Using a personal or ‘better’ firewall software)
#2: Privacy issues, and what NOT to do
#3: Completing Financial Transactions online (Selling hardware – Buying hardware via eBay)
#4: Completing Online Banking / Funds Transfer ‘SAFELY’
#5: WHAT; To look for while doing ANY of these type of activity.

Due to other commitments, (The ‘Security-Theme’, which is what this blog is supposed to contain, amongst other topics), AND; The fact that – WELL; How should I put this without sounding like a complete nutter, .. I just have not had the need, or the inclination, and/or, been ‘forced’ to face the uglier aspects of using the Internet.

I mean, really, who wants to read, (And comprehend, all the stuff thats is required to keep your ‘digital-life’ / ‘Computing-Online’ SAFE?

Well, not me, BUT; It needs to be understood and completed safely. And it does take some time – just to keep things going along tickety-boo.

IF, you would like to investigate these topic further here is one little link to start you off - Security – Privacy

Well; here is a few more >>> ANZ, Westpac, Microsoft

One last comment for now about ‘The Security angle’, … As much as we all might like to bash the banking system, and it corporate executives, … They do provide documentation about WHAT to do, (AND what NOT to do), when using theire online services. (AND; I would have to say that it is ‘As up to Date’, as required), from a perspective on ‘Being Safe Online’, from a new-users angle.

As the Wiki maintainer might say – reference required, and please expand, – BUT; I do have other studies being neglected.
